One of the best to ever put on the purple and gold, Moon played at Washington from 1975 to 1977 after transferring in from West Los Angeles, a junior college. Moon's first year with the Huskies coincided with the first year of legendary coach Don James, and together, the two led Washington to a Pac-8 championship and Rose Bowl win in the 1977 season.
Moon went on to have a long and storied career in both the CFL and NFL, leading both leagues in passing yards on two separate occasions. In the NFL, he was also a nine-time pro-bowler, Offensive Player of the Year, Man of the Year, and had his No. 1 retired by the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans — which he recently allowed first overall pick and former Washington State Cougar Cam Ward to wear.
While Moon's college career with Washington was more run-of-the-mill compared to other quarterbacks who played for the program, Moon's professional career is what set him apart as one of the best quarterbacks of all time, and UW's greatest football alumni. He was named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006 — the first African-American quarterback to receive that honor.
So it's safe to say Moon's return to Seattle on Saturday will be a big deal. Last week, fans were pleased when fan favorite Zion Tupuola-Fetui was an honorary captain, and former quarterback Jake Browning sounded the siren in Washington's season opener against Colorado State.
Moon's son, Ryken Moon, is also currently a freshman running back on the Huskies. Let's hope Moon's greatness can rub off on the Dawgs for the rest of the season.
