Hannes Steinbach is preparing to be a top 15 pick in the NBA Draft. His Washington Husky career propelled him into a lottery pick conversation, and his NBA Combine boosted his standing even higher. He's considered one of the best power forward/center candidates in the 2026 NBA Draft and will have to go up against the top NBA big men. One of those elite big men is Victor Wembanyama.

During his interviews, he was asked about how he would go about guarding Wembanyama, and his answer summed up the NBA's approach to the star. It had people laughing, even Steinbach himself. "I guess being physical, but that's probably not going to work."

Steinbach was an elite college player at Washington, even though Danny Sprinkle's team wasn't good at all. Steinbach carried the Huskies to a ton of victories and was considered a double-double machine. His performance propelled him into a lottery pick conversation, and many NBA Scouts and pundits consider him a "safe" NBA pick.

However, his measurements and performance at the NBA Combine propelled him into a top-10 conversation. Now he will wait to see if a team actually grabs him in that range. Steinbach is mostly mocked in the late lottery as team needs fall perfectly for Steinbach in that range.

In the latest NBA Consensus mock drafts, Steinbach is drafted No. 12, 13, and 14 in various projections. Yet, in the NBA Big Board, he's listed as the No. 10 best prospect. So there's some real debate about where he will land.

When he does land on a team, at some point, he will be guarding Wembanyama, and this quote will come back to make people laugh again. Guarding Wembanyama is an impossible task, but someone has to do it, and that task will eventually fall to Steinbach.
