Final injury and redshirt updates ahead of Washington's visit to UCLA

Top Washington talents like wide receiver Denzel Boston and running back Jonah Coleman were among many players inactive last weekend. As a result, more backups are seeing the field, including some redshirt-eligible players. Here’s what head coach Jedd Fisch and ESPN’s Pete Thamel had to say this week about who could see the field in Pasadena:

Armon Parker - Out for season

Parker had been contributing on the defensive line throughout his redshirt junior season, but he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury before the Purdue game and underwent season-ending surgery shortly after.

“Armon has an ACL injury, so he had to get operated on again on Monday,” Fisch said during Thursday’s press conference.

It’s another brutal blow to Parker, who missed the entirety of the 2024 season after suffering an ACL injury during a pick-up basketball game before the season.

Justice Williams - Out for season

Williams, a redshirt freshman wideout with two receptions for 28 yards, hasn’t appeared in a game since Week 5. However, he appeared on the Purdue game’s availability report as ‘Out for the season,’ a status which Fisch confirmed on Thursday.

“We made a decision that we couldn’t get him back without getting his toe repaired, so he’s just getting his toe fixed,” Fisch said.

Landen Hatchett - Out

The Husky center currently has a club-like cast over his right hand, which prevents him from snapping the ball with his dominant hand. He didn’t play against Purdue, but was suited up in case a need arose at guard. However, Fisch asserted on Tuesday that he would remain out at center until his snapping hand improved.

“He’d have to snap left-handed is [Reason] No. 1, and No. 2 he would have to, right now, block with a ball cast,” Fisch said. “That’s a little more challenging than we want it to be.”

Hatchett is likely to watch this week’s contest from the Rose Bowl sidelines, as he was one of four Huskies whom ESPN’s Thamel reported as expected to be unavailable:

Drew Azzopardi - Out

The two-year starting offensive tackle suffered an ankle injury when he was rolled up on in the second quarter of Wisconsin’s game. He did not suit up against Purdue and won’t be available against UCLA, though he has yet to be ruled out for the season.

“Drew most likely will not be able to go,” Fisch said on Tuesday.

This was seemingly confirmed on Saturday morning by ESPN’s Thamel, though Thamel didn’t comment on Azzopardi’s future availability.

Denzel Boston - Out

The Huskies’ WR1 suffered an ankle injury against Wisconsin, which then held him out of last week’s game against Purdue. Fisch said postgame that Boston had been struggling to make cuts during workouts that week.

Fisch wasn’t optimistic about the redshirt junior’s chances of returning when asked on Thursday, but he didn’t rule anything out.

“He’s feeling okay. I think [it’s] going to be a stretch to be able to get him ready to play in this game,” Fisch said. “We’re going to do our best over these next 48 hours to push it, but not put him at risk.”

However, Thamel reported on Saturday that the Huskies were going to be without Boston. This could mean he suffered a setback in his recovery, but it’s possible he’s being rested as a precaution ahead of next week’s Oregon game.

Raiden Vines-Bright - Out

Play was stopped and an ambulance was brought onto the field after the true freshman receiver was seemingly knocked unconscious during the second quarter of last Saturday’s game. Thankfully, Fisch described Vines-Bright as “fully mobile, fully awake, fully alert” during his postgame press conference, and gave another promising update when asked about Vines-Bright’s condition on Monday.

“Good. He’s doing very good, actually,” Fisch said. “He’s already begun his protocol to return.”

However, Fisch stated on Thursday that Vines-Bright remains unlikely to play against UCLA.

“We have to wait and see for the final decision, but yeah, most likely,” Fisch said when asked if Vines-Bright would sit out against the Bruins.

This was confirmed by Thamel via X on Saturday morning.

Isaiah Ward - Doubtful

The junior defensive end has missed three games since suffering a lower-body injury against Michigan. Fisch has yet to rule Ward out, but seemed dismissive regarding his chances of playing on Saturday.

“We’ll know today at practice,” Fisch said on Thursday. “He did some running yesterday, but it’ll be a long shot.”

Audric Harris - Questionable

The injuries to Boston, Vines-Bright and other Huskies receivers have resulted in significant playing time for sophomore receiver Harris, who has already participated in four games this season but has yet to use a redshirt. If Harris plays again this year, he’ll lose access to that option.

Keeping a redshirt this year would prolong Harris’ playing career without guaranteeing him another season of general inactivity, so there’s certainly a logic to sitting out this opportunity to protect his long-term interests. However, Washington needs reinforcements at receiver, and quick.

“I think he’s mulling it over, trying to make the best decision [that he] and his family believe he can make,” Fisch said on Thursday. “I do believe that there’s some great value in playing football, and playing in these games, and potentially starting in these games, and hopefully he sees that value. But again, those are a unique set of circumstances.”

Jonah Coleman - Questionable

Washington’s touchdown machine suffered a knee injury in the second quarter of the Huskies’ 13-10 loss to Wisconsin two weeks ago, which sidelined him for the remainder of that contest and the Purdue game. Thankfully, Coleman seems to be on the right track to play on Saturday.

“Jonah’s having a good week,” Fisch said. “A good week, and we’re excited about where it looks. Again, I thought he was going to play last week, but he kind of stuck his foot wrong in pregame warmup, so hopefully that won’t happen again and hopefully we’re able to play him.

“He’s had a much, much better week this week than he had last week,” Fisch said. “I’m confident that he’ll play, but we’ll see.”

Thamel was less optimistic regarding Coleman’s progress. He reported via X that Coleman’s status was likely to be determined in pregame warmups, and that his playing time will be limited if he plays:

Tacario Davis - Questionable

Davis escaped injury discussion throughout this week’s press conferences, but Thamel’s Saturday report listed him as questionable alongside Coleman. Davis missed three games earlier in the season after suffering a rib injury, but Thamel didn’t specify the nature of his current issue. Husky fans should be watching pregame warmups closely.

More backup receivers could get playing time

The injuries to Boston and Vines-Bright, the earlier loss of Rashid Williams, and the eligibility concerns regarding Harris have given Washington’s backup receivers increased opportunity for playing time. On Thursday, Fisch named four freshman pass-catchers who could see the field in Pasadena:

“Marcus Harris, yes. Chris Lawson, a lot of Chris Lawson. Kevin Green we could definitely see, Luke Gayton we could see…” Fisch said. “There’s definitely a group of guys that we could see more of depending on the circumstances that occur.”
