The pairing of Michael Penix Jr.’s talents with the offensive system designed by Kalen DeBoer and Ryan Grubb really made a statement for the Washington Huskies in 2022. After four seasons with the Indiana Hoosiers, Penix left in search of a place to finish out his career.

And as DeBoer and Grubb were working on quickly rebuilding the Huskies’ football program, they went out and brought Penix to town and allowed him to work his magic. I’m sure you’ll be shocked to learn that things worked out really, really well in a very quick slice of time.

In his first season with the Washington Huskies, Penix helped UW go out and get 11 wins. In just one season. The Huskies won a lot and they won in a hurry. Oh, and Penix also managed to throw for 4641 yards, which certainly helped the Huskies win a bunch of games.

Washington Husky football history: Michael Penix Jr. made a statement for the Huskies in 2022

That passing total, at the time, equaled the most passing yards any Washington Husky quarterback had ever thrown in a single season. Again. Brief period of time. Very early into his time at UW. Penix was making his mark on the Huskies football program. It was incredible.

Some fun stats from Penix during the 2022 season:

  • 516 yards vs. the Arizona Wildcats
  • 485 yards vs. the Washington State Cougars
  • 408 yards vs. the Oregon Ducks
  • 397 yards vs. the Michigan State Spartans
  • 374 yards vs. the California Golden Bears
  • 345 yards vs. the UCLA Bruins
  • 345 yards vs. the Kent State Golden Flashes
  • 287 yards vs. the Texas Longhorns

Oh! And it was efficient too! This wasn’t just some sort of gunslinging operation that resulted in dumb plays taking place.

Penix completed 362 of his 554 attempts, which is good for a 65.3 percent completion percentage. He threw 31 touchdown passes while also tossing eight interceptions and he managed to average 8.38 yards per pass attempt. All of that is pretty remarkable.
