We’ve already gone over a few different Big Ten programs that have defined decent expectations and subsequently experienced steady and sustained success. Now it’s time to go over one of the more successful teams in this conference: the Michigan Wolverines.
As Eddie Smith guides the Husky baseball team into being a full member of the Big Ten this season, Washington won’t actually get the chance to meet up with one of the more prominent programs that the Big Ten can offer. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t go over everything that Michigan has accomplished throughout program history.
The Wolverines have seen some truly spectacular heights as a program, but it’s been a while since they've won it all. Let’s go over what you need to know about the Wolverines as we enter the 2025 season.
Michigan Wolverines baseball history overview
One of the most successful programs from a NCAA tournament appearance perspective and a team that has actually won a couple of national championships (though it’s admittedly been a little while since that last championship run).
Here’s a glimpse of what Michigan has accomplished since the baseball program got underway in 1866:
- 26 NCAA Tournament appearances (1953, 1961, 1962, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2022)
- 8 College World Series appearances (1953, 1962, 1978, 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, 2019)
- 2 National Championships (1953, 1962)
- 10 Big Ten Tournament Championships (1981, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1987, 1999, 2006, 2008, 2015, 2022)
- 35 Regular Season Conference Championships (most recently in 2008)
That’s a lot to be proud of!
Who is the current head coach of the Michigan Wolverines?
After losing their head coach to the Clemson Tigers a few years back, the Michigan Wolverines went out and picked up Tracy Smith, who is heading into his third season in Ann Arbor. Smith currently has a record of 60-56 with the Wolverines, but he compiled a 201-155 record at ARizona State, a 287-237 record with the Indiana Hoosiers, and a 317-220-1 record with Miami (Ohio).
Where does the Michigan Wolverines baseball team play?
Ray Fisher Stadium happens to be the homefield for the Michigan Wolverines baseball team. It’s part of the Wilpon Baseball and Softball Complex in Ann Arbor and it originally opened up in 1923. A total of around 4,000 fans can show up to cheer on the Michigan baseball team during home games.
When will the Washington Huskies face Michigan baseball in 2025?
Well, they won’t. Not unless something weird happens that we can’t predict or the Huskies and Wolverines have a chance to meet up in the Big Ten conference tournament. But otherwise, these two won’t face off this season.
