Big Ten rushing touchdown rankings after week 9: Where does Jonah Coleman rank?
By Ethan Lee
The first Big Ten football season in Washington Huskies football history could be going better. It could also be going worse. For running back Jonah Coleman, the Huskies have found a strong, dynamic force for their backfield. Coleman has been central to Washington’s offensive success. But, while Coleman thrives in numerous categories, he hasn’t exactly gotten into the end zone nearly enough.
That’s a problem the Huskies have across the board, but it’s certainly notable here. Coleman, the former Arizona Wildcat who left Tucson to follow head coach Jedd Fisch, has shown he can be a dominant rusher.
Unfortunately, when it comes to rushing touchdowns, the Huskies haven’t gotten Coleman into the end zone anywhere near enough times. Coleman is in an interesting position here as one of the most productive running backs in the Big Ten who just simply hasn’t scored all that often.
Through the first eight games of the season, Coleman has only scored five rushing touchdowns. Where does that put the talented running backs when compared to his contemporaries? Well, right now he’s in a three-way tie for No. 12 in the Big Ten conference.
That’s… Less than great, but it certainly could be worse.
Jonah Coleman sits in a tie at No. 12 for Big Ten rushing touchdowns rankings
Here’s what the Big Ten looks like when examining running backs (and a few quick quarterbacks) and rushing touchdowns:
- Kaleb Johnson (Iowa Hawkeyes) - 16 touchdowns
- Tawee Walker (Wisconsin Badgers) - 10 touchdowns
- Kyle Monangai (Rutgers Scarlet Knights) - 10 touchdowns
- Justice Ellison (Indiana Hoosiers) - 9 touchdowns
- Jordan James (Oregon Ducks) - 8 touchdowns
- Ty Son Lawton (Indiana Hoosiers) - 8 touchdowns
- Woody Marks (USC Trojans) - 8 touchdowns
- Kalel Mullings (Michigan Wolverines) - 7 touchdowns
- Darius Taylor (Minnesota Golden Gophers) - 7 touchdowns
- Dante Dowdell (Nebraska Cornhuskers) - 6 touchdowns
- Quinshon Judkins (Ohio State Buckeyes) - 6 touchdowns
- Jonah Coleman (Washington Huskies) - 5 touchdowns
- Billy Edwards Jr. (Maryland Terrapins) - 5 touchdowns
- Cam Porter (Northwestern Wildcats) - 5 touchdowns
Again, I don’t think Coleman should be critiqued here. The Huskies, in general, struggle to get into the end zone this season. But it’s worth noting that he deserves more carries and more opportunities, as long as he’s healthy to do just that.
