It’s abundantly clear that Danny Sprinkle and the Washington Huskies men’s basketball team are in the midst of a rebuilding season. And while there have been some encouraging moments, that Saturday afternoon loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes (a game UW once led by a dozen points) is pretty good evidence that there’s plenty of work to be done with Washington men’s basketball right now.

It’s worth remembering that Washington’s rebuilding process might take a little bit of time. But, well, that doesn’t make the losses any more enjoyable and it certainly doesn’t make the fact that Washington is sitting at the very bottom of the Big Ten standings really any better.

Because that’s where UW is at the moment. The Huskies are having a hard time stringing together a ton of success in the Big Ten this season.

Big Ten basketball standings, Feb. 23: Washington Huskies trailing at the bottom of their new conference home after loss to Iowa Hawkeyes

Here’s what the Big Ten men’s basketball standings look like right now:

  • Michigan State Spartans (13-3 Big Ten, 22-5 overall)
  • Michigan Wolverines (12-3 Big Ten, 20-6 overall)
  • Maryland Terrapins (11-5 Big Ten, 21-6 overall)
  • Wisconsin Badgers (11-5 Big Ten, 21-6 overall)
  • Purdue Boilermakers (11-6 Big Ten, 19-9 overall)
  • UCLA Bruins (11-6 Big Ten, 20-8 overall)
  • Illinois Fighting Illini (9-8 Big Ten, 17-11 overall)
  • Oregon Ducks (9-8 Big Ten, 20-8 overall)
  • Indiana Hoosiers (7-9 Big Ten, 16-11 overall)
  • Nebraska Cornhuskers (7-9 Big Ten, 17-10 overall)
  • Ohio State Buckeyes (7-10 Big Ten, 15-13 overall)
  • USC Trojans (6-9 Big Ten, 14-12 overall)
  • Iowa Hawkeyes (6-10 Big Ten, 15-12 overall)
  • Minnesota Golden Gophers (6-10 Big Ten, 14-13 overall)
  • Rutgers Scarlet Knights (6-10 Big Ten, 13-14 overall)
  • Northwestern Wildcats (5-11 Big Ten, 14-13 overall)
  • Penn State Nittany Lions (5-12 Big Ten, 15-13 overall)
  • Washington Huskies (4-12 Big Ten, 13-14 overall)

Looking outside of basketball in Seattle for a moment, the Big Ten race is actually a ton of fun as Michigan State holds a narrow advantage over the Michigan Wolverines. And really, the Maryland Terrapins and Wisconsin Badgers aren’t that far behind.

Of course, with all of the top end men’s basketball talent that exists in the Big Ten, that makes it that much more difficult for the Huskies to get back on track as a program. It’s going to take some time for UW to assemble the talent necessary to compete with the likes of those teams on a regular basis.
