He’s in his first season with the Washington Huskies, but with the way college football coaching has drastically changed in recent years (and the way some UW fans have felt about the way this season has gone), it’s worth exploring how much Jedd Fisch makes and what his buyout is.
Now, I’m not at all advocating for Fisch to be fired. I think he’s the sort of coach that can elevate a team in a hurry (as we saw with his time in Tucson leading the Arizona Wildcats).
What I am saying is I think we should remember just how much money Fisch makes (it’s a lot of money) and for the folks who want to get rid of him in his first year, how much money it’d take to get rid of a perfectly good coach in his first year (it’s also a lot of money).
Kalen DeBoer set a high standard, but he left in a hurry. He also had a remarkably talented roster assembled. Fisch had a roster that was essentially turned over in just one offseason. There’s very little continuity.
And so, it wouldn’t make sense to get rid of him in what is just his first season in Seattle for that reason. And also because he’s expensive.
What is Jedd Fisch’s buyout with the Washington Huskies in 2024?
Fisch’s buyout and salary are both rather substantial.
Starting on December 1, 2024, the buyout will be $40,239,960. He’s on a seven-year contract and folks on Montlake are aiming for him to be in Seattle leading the Huskies for the foreseeable future.
That buyout figure ranks at fourth among all Big Ten coaches this season (for the coaches that have publicly disclosed buyouts, that is, we don’t know the buyouts for Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans or for David Braun and the Northwestern Wildcats).
Of the buyouts that we do know of, Fisch is behind James Franklin ($56.6 million), Matt Rhule ($56.2 million), and Dan Lanning ($45.4 million).
This buyout being so large should indicate some solid security for the Huskies. They are almost certainly intending for Fisch to be leading the UW football program for the foreseeable future and they want a contract to cement that as much as possible.
