When the Oregon Ducks made the move from the Pac-12 to the Big Ten, they brought with them one of the most intriguing head football coaches in the country in Dan Lanning. While he’s just 38-years-old, Lanning is proving to be one of the best head coaches in the country (and he might just be a problem for the Washington Huskies for the foreseeable future, unfortunately).

There’s a lot of money flowing around the Oregon Ducks football program and they pay Dan Lanning really well to be their head coach. It’s more than evident that Oregon doesn’t want Lanning leaving to coach anywhere else (and there’s really no incentive to fire a man who has won over 30 games in fewer than 3 complete seasons).

So it shouldn’t shock anyone that Lanning might happen to have one of the heftiest buyouts in the Big Ten. Lanning has a substantial contract that should keep him in Eugene for as long as he wants to be the head coach of the Ducks.

Big Ten coaching salary: What is Oregon Ducks head coach Dan Lanning’s buyout in 2024?

As of December 1, 2024, Lanning’s buyout is set to become a remarkable $45.37 million

If you’re thinking that’s a lot of money, you’d be right! There’s no way Oregon will be parting ways with him any time soon because that’s not just pocket change for the average Joe. Lanning has a ton of job security (which is a result of the fact that he’s shown he can win at a high level in a hurry in Eugene).

There aren’t many coaches in the Big Ten with heftier buyouts. At the moment, Just James Franklin and Matt Rhule would be owed more money if they were (for some bizarre reason) fired on Sunday.

Lanning won’t be an easy coach for another program to poach and he’s not going to be fired any time soon.

There’s a very good chance that, despite the fact that he is currently 0-3 against the Washington Huskies, he and his Oregon team will find some ways to frustrate UW fans for the foreseeable future. That doesn’t mean Jedd Fisch won’t beat him, but it does mean Lanning will likely be in Eugene for a while.
