Following the recent win over a former Pac-12 rival, the Washington Huskies men’s basketball team was able to build a little momentum (but they weren’t able to improve their spot in the Big Ten standings any). And, well, the reason for that is a little obvious. Washington State isn’t in the Big Ten while Washington is.

But hey, the rivalry win is always a good thing to have. Danny Sprinkle’s Washington Huskies managed to hand the Cougars a solid 26-point beating, which is never a bad thing for UW. Getting a rivalry win, maintaining an edge over Washington State, that’s good stuff for in-state and regional recruiting efforts.

It also doesn’t hurt Sprinkle’s efforts to build a cohesive unit of a team. As the Huskies are continuing to define what this program is going to be under a first year head coach, getting wins like this (especially by this sort of margin) matters.

So it’s encouraging.

Now, let’s take a look at the Big Ten standings and records and see where everyone is right now.

Big Ten men’s basketball standings, records: December 20, 2024

  • UCLA Bruins (2-0 Big Ten, 10-1 overall)
  • Michigan State Spartans (2-0, 9-2)
  • Michigan Wolverines (2-0, 8-3)
  • Oregon Ducks (1-1, 10-1)
  • Maryland Terrapins (1-1, 9-2)
  • Penn State Nittany Lions (1-1, 9-2)
  • Nebraska Cornhuskers (1-1, 7-2)
  • Indiana Hoosiers (1-1, 8-3)
  • Iowa Hawkeyes (1-1, 8-3)
  • Northwestern Wildcats (1-1, 8-3)
  • Purdue Boilermakers (1-1, 8-3)
  • Illinois Fighting Illini (1-1, 7-3)
  • USC Trojans (1-1, 8-4)
  • Ohio State Buckeyes (1-1, 7-4)
  • Rutgers Scarlet Knights (1-1, 7-4)
  • Wisconsin Badgers (0-2, 9-3)
  • Washington Huskies (0-2, 8-3)
  • Minnesota Golden Gophers (0-2, 6-5)

Leading the Big Ten is a newcomer in the UCLA Bruins, but the Michigan State Spartans and Michigan Wolverines both have solid 2-0 starts to conference play as well.

Then you get the bulk of the conference with 1-1 records so far.

The Oregon Ducks, Maryland Terrapins, Penn State Nittany Lions, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Indiana Hoosiers, Iowa Hawkeyes, Northwestern Wildcats, Purdue Boilermakers, Illinois Fighting Illini, USC Trojans, Ohio State Buckeyes, and Rutgers Scarlet Knights all have 1-1 records in conference play.

After that? The Wisconsin Badgers, Washington Huskies, and Minnesota Golden Gophers round out the conference standings.

The good news? There’s still plenty of time for Sprinkle and the Huskies to get things turned around. The bad news? This is the Big Ten and the competition is going to be pretty fierce for a program that is looking to build under a first year head coach.
