Big Ten baseball standings: Washington Huskies hold No. 4 after win vs. Rutgers

Beating the Rutgers Scarlet Knights to start the weekend isn’t exactly the most impressive thing a college baseball team could ever do, but it’s certainly a solid thing that the Washington Huskies can do after dropping a midweek game against the Oregon State Beavers.

This Husky baseball team is so bizarre sometimes. Washington is below .500 on the season overall. They’re not a particularly impressive or remarkable team when you look at the whole deal. But in Big Ten play? Well, Washington keeps winning. At least so far, that is.

And that’s one reason why the Huskies have a solid spot in the Big Ten baseball standings right now. And I really hope this continues because it’s so dang fun to watch.

Big Ten baseball standings, records - March 29: Washington holds solid spot after taking the series opener against Rutgers

This is what the Big Ten baseball standings look like after Eddie Smith and the Huskies took the Friday night game against Rutgers:

  • Iowa Hawkeyes: 10-2 Big Ten, 17-9 overall
  • Oregon Ducks: 8-2 Big Ten, 20-5 overall
  • UCLA Bruins: 8-2 Big Ten, 20-5 overall
  • Washington Huskies: 5-2 Big Ten, 12-15 overall
  • Penn State Nittany Lions: 6-4 Big Ten, 17-8 overall
  • Northwestern Wildcats: 4-3 Big Ten, 11-12 overall
  • Indiana Hoosiers: 6-5 Big Ten, 15-12 overall
  • Illinois Fighting Illini: 4-4 Big Ten, 14-10 overall
  • Michigan Wolverines: 5-5 Big Ten, 13-12 overall
  • USC Trojans: 5-6 Big Ten, 15-11 overall
  • Purdue Boilermakers: 3-4 Big Ten, 20-5 overall
  • Michigan State Spartans: 3-5 Big Ten, 16-10 overall
  • Maryland Terrapins: 2-5 Big Ten, 13-13 overall
  • Rutgers Scarlet Knights: 2-5 Big Ten, 11-15 overall
  • Minnesota Golden Gophers: 2-7 Big Ten, 11-14 overall
  • Nebraska Cornhuskers: 2-7 Big Ten, 11-14 overall
  • Ohio State Buckeyes: 0-7 Big Ten, 6-16 overall

Let’s go over some of the Big Ten teams Washington has beaten to get to this point, shall we? The Nebraska Cornhuskers (for two of three from the series), who are not good. Then there’s the Maryland Terrapins (again, two of three from the series), who aren’t much better. And now, so far, one from Rutgers. If you’ll notice, Rutgers also isn’t great.

BUT HEY, WASHINGTON IS WINNING THESE GAMES AND THAT MATTERS. LET’S ENJOY IT. At least for as long as this ride will take us. I have no clue what will happen when UW inevitably meets up with a competent Big Ten baseball team (it will probably maybe happen at some point, I think).

I mean, a competent Big Ten baseball team has to exist, right? I know this isn’t the SEC or Big 12 or what have you, but the Oregon Ducks and UCLA Bruins are both 20-5 overall on the season. That has to mean something, right? They’re (now) competent Big Ten baseball teams, right?

Until that happens, I'm going to enjoy the chaos that this UW baseball team is bringing. Because this is fun. And we should all enjoy the little, chaotic things in life.
