Slowly and steadily, it’s really starting to look like Eddie Smith and the Washington Huskies might be able to make this 2025 NCAA baseball season a pretty fun one. The Huskies showed some potential early, then hit a four-game snag as they stumbled against a solid Stanford Cardinal team.
But now, Washington has won six of its last 10 games. The Huskies are currently tied for No. 2 in the (very, very early Big Ten baseball standings). There is a chance that this season might be something that Washington Husky fans can really enjoy.
And I’m here for that if that’s the case.
Big Ten baseball standings, records - March 12: Oregon Ducks hold a lead and sit atop the conference for now
It’s still very, very early in the season. There are some Big Ten baseball teams that simply haven’t played a single conference game yet. Like the Michigan State Spartans, for example. Or shoutout to the Northwestern Wildcats.
But right now, after sweeping the USC Trojans, the Oregon Ducks are currently clinging to a narrow lead in the Big Ten baseball standings.
- Oregon Ducks: 14-3 overall, 3-0 Big Ten
- Iowa Hawkeyes: 8-7 overall, 2-1 Big Ten
- Michigan Wolverines: 9-6 overall, 2-1 Big Ten
- Penn State Nittany Lions: 11-3 overall, 2-1 Big Ten
- Purdue Boilermakers: 14-2 overall, 2-1 Big Ten
- UCLA Bruins: 13-4 overall, 2-1 Big Ten
- Washington Huskies: 8-9 overall, 2-1 Big Ten
- Illinois Fighting Illini: 8-6 overall, 1-2 Big Ten
- Indiana Hoosiers: 8-9 overall, 1-2 Big Ten
- Maryland Terrapins: 8-8 overall, 1-2 Big Ten
- Minnesota Golden Gophers: 7-7 overall, 1-2 Big Ten
- Nebraska Cornhuskers: 6-8 overall, 1-2 Big Ten
- Rutgers Scarlet Knights: 7-9 overall, 1-2 Big Ten
- Michigan State Spartans: 12-3 overall, 0-0 Big Ten
- Northwestern Wildcats: 7-7 overall, 0-0 Big Ten
- Ohio State Buckeyes: 5-9 overall, 0-0 Big Ten
- USC Trojans: 9-7 overall, 0-3 Big Ten
It’s legitimately fun to see the West Coast teams doing well in the Big Ten baseball standings at the moment. The Ducks, at the top, have the No. 1 spot. And then there’s the Washington Huskies and UCLA Bruins sandwiched in the midst of that large group of teams tied for No. 2 in the conference.
And then there’s the USC Trojans at the bottom. Let’s ignore them for a moment.
The move to the Big Ten is going to be tough for most aspects of the Washington Husky athletics department. But, I have this theory that baseball is a sport that the Huskies might suddenly have a bit more success in moving forward because this conference just isn’t as good as the old Pac-12 was (in terms of overall depth).
There’s a unique opportunity for Smith and his Washington Husky baseball team to really have some fun (both this season and moving forward).
