Eddie Smith and the Washington Huskies are in a pretty decent spot, all things considered. Yeah, their overall record stinks. 11-14 on the season isn’t great, even with this being the first season of a rebuilding project.
But you know what is pretty good?
The Washington Huskies have won both of their Big Ten series so far and I, for one, think that’s something worth enjoying. Because right now, the Huskies are holding on to the No. 4 spot in the Big Ten baseball standings.
After taking the series away from the Maryland Terrapins, the Washington Huskies now sit amongst the best baseball teams in the Big Ten. That’s something to enjoy for as long as it lasts. And with the way the Big Ten looks from top to bottom this season, that might actually last for a little while.
Who knows?
Let’s go ahead and take a quick look at the entire Big Ten baseball standings and where the Huskies are among their peers at the moment.
Big Ten baseball standings, March 24: Washington Husky baseball near the top of their new conference
Here’s what the Big Ten baseball picture looks like at the moment:
- Iowa Hawkeyes: 7-2 Big Ten, 14-8 overall
- Oregon Ducks: 7-2 Big Ten, 19-5 overall
- UCLA Bruins: 7-2 Big Ten, 18-5 overall
- Washington Huskies: 4-2 Big Ten, 11-14 overall
- Indiana Hoosiers: 5-4 Big Ten, 13-11 overall
- Michigan Wolverines: 5-4 Big Ten, 13-10 overall
- Penn State Nittany Lions: 5-4 Big Ten, 16-7 overall
- Michigan State Spartans: 3-3 Big Ten, 16-7 overall
- Northwestern Wildcats: 3-3 Big Ten, 10-11 overall
- Purdue Boilermakers: 3-3 Big Ten, 19-4 overall
- USC Trojans: 4-5 Big Ten, 14-9 overall
- Illinois Fighting Illini: 2-4 Big Ten, 12-9 overall
- Maryland Terrapins: 2-4 Big Ten, 12-12 overall
- Minnesota Golden Gophers: 2-4 Big Ten, 11-11 overall
- Rutgers Scarlet Knights: 2-4 Big Ten, 10-14 overall
- Nebraska Cornhuskers: 2-7 Big Ten, 10-13 overall
- Ohio State Buckeyes: 0-6 Big Ten, 6-15 overall
There’s a bit of an interesting logjam of teams at the top of the conference standings at the moment with the Iowa Hawkeyes, Oregon Ducks, and UCLA Bruins all tied with 7-2 conference records. Following that trio, we’ve got our Washington Huskies. Again, that’s not bad.
After UW, there’s another trio tied up as the Indiana Hoosiers, Michigan Wolverines, and Penn State Nittany Lions all have identical 5-4 conference records at the moment. Then we’ve got the Michigan State State Spartans, Northwestern Wildcats, and Purdue Boilermakers tied up at 3-3 each.
The USC Trojans get the distinct pleasure of being the only team in the Big Ten with a 4-5 record at the moment. Following the Trojans, we find the Illinois Fighting Illini, the Maryland Terrapins, Minnesota Golden Gophers, and Rutgers Scarlet Knights all tied with 2-4 conference records.
Towards the bottom sit the Nebraska Cornhuskers with their 2-7 Big Ten record and then the Ohio State Buckeyes round things out with a winless conference record.
The Washington Huskies are in an interesting spot in the Big Ten right now
There’s an interesting disparting taking place with regards to Washington’s overall record and the struggles UW has seen at times and where the Huskies currently sit in the Big Ten. Washington’s got a pretty noteworthy differential taking place there.
The Huskies, holding the No. 4 spot in the conference with their .667 Big Ten win percentage, rank at No. 10 overall with their .440 win percentage on the season. It’s just kind of weird.
Part of that success in Big Ten play is because the Huskies have gotten to face off against the Nebraska Cornhuskers, who are second-to-last in the Big Ten baseball standings, and the Maryland Terrapins, who are 12-12 overall.
There’s a chance that we’ll see Washington continue to have success down the stretch of this season. There’s also a chance that we’ll see things catch up to Washington when tougher competition shows up.
