The 2024 season (and the calendar year) are coming to a close for Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies. And it’s unfortunately coming to an end in a way that isn’t exactly the most fun way for Washington Huskies football fans.
In the 2024 Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, Fisch’s Washington Husky football team was unable to complete a thrilling comeback against the Louisville Cardinals. Unfortunately for UW, the Huskies fell 35-34 against the Cardinals. And while the attempt at a comeback in and of itself was an exciting thing, it would have been even better had Washignton found a way to get the win against Louisville.
And yet, here we are, with the Huskies on the losing end.
The game was exciting though. These two teams were very evenly matched. So, with this game being done, let’s take a look at some numbers and check out three interesting stats that came up in UW’s one-point loss to Louisville.
3 intriguing stats from the Washington Huskies’ loss against the Louisville Cardinals in the 2024 Sun Bowl
- Five sacks allowed - The Washington Huskies really need to address a few things up front on both sides of the ball, but it’s alarming that Louisville was able to routinely get pressure on Demond Williams Jr. But what makes this stat intriguing is how Williams still completed 81 percent of his passes for 374 yards and four touchdowns. So, despite the pressure and contact, Williams was still really impressive.
- 97 yards - The length of a crucial drive. With the game in the fourth quarter and Washington down by two scores against the Cardinals, Williams was able to guide the Huskies offense a total of 97 yards down the field in one of the most impressive drives of the season for Washington. There was a ton of pressure on Williams to lead the Huskies and he didn’t falter. Instead, he guided the Huskies essentially the length of the field to get a touchdown when Washington needed it.
- Four touchdown receptions - Entering the Sun Bowl, Giles Jackson managed to catch three touchdown passes. In the Sun Bowl, Jackson more than doubled the total number of touchdown catches on the season. That’s impressive. He caught three touchdowns that went at least 30 yards. Good chance that Jackson had the most impressive game today.
Washington will now roll on into the offseason with a quarterback that the Huskies can build around. There should be plenty of reasons for excitement for the Huskies going forward. Obviously there’s still room for improvement, but Jedd Fisch is building a pretty nice foundation for this team.
