There are several key factors that Washington football must address to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Even though they are winning, the Washington football programs feels like they are in a slight funk right now. Games against lower-tier teams are ending too closely. The College Football Playoff committee released their first rankings of the season and the Huskies have been ranked at No. 5, one spot short. To secure a spot in the college football playoff, they need to revitalize their performance and regain their dominance.

Win out

First and foremost, the Huskies must win out in the remaining games against USC, Utah, Oregon State, and Washington State. This is non-negotiable. Three of those teams are ranked in the Top 25. Dropping any of these games could be a fatal blow to their playoff aspirations. It’s essential for the team to approach each game with a sense of urgency and determination.

Offensive resurgence

Last week the Huskies offensive felt resurgent with Michael Penix Jr. throwing for 369 yards and four touchdowns, two of which went to Ja’Lynn Polk. There were a few weeks there where the offensive hit a stalemate. To make the college football playoff, they need to make sure that the offense is firing on all cylinders once more.

Replicating some of their big games will help the offense rediscover their scoring prowess, execute plays with precision, and maintain consistency in their offensive output. Whether it’s improving the passing game, enhancing the rushing attack, or capitalizing on turnovers, offensive efficiency is paramount.

Defensive prowess

The Huskies have been giving up more points than they should to lower-tier teams. They need to prove that they are a sturdy and reliable unit, as most of the concerns about Washington’s playoff potential has been about the defense.

Maintaining discipline, creating turnovers, and applying consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks will be key to securing victories in the remaining games.

The road ahead

Washington football’s path to the college football playoff is still open, however, their fate remains up to them. To achieve this, they must win all remaining games and refocus on both their offensive and defensive performance.

They need prove that they are indeed a force to be reckoned with in college football. While the road ahead could be tough, the Huskies have the talent and potential to overcome the obstacles and stake their claim in the College Football Playoff.
