Washington football: Lack of sack production is a cause for concern
Some may think it is hard to find a weakness for this 2023 Washington football team. With every win so far—minus last week’s win vs. Arizona—being in a dominating blowout fashion. I believe there is one huge cause for concern that the Huskies must improve immediately if they want to be considered one of the best teams in the country and want the chance to fight for not only the Pac-12 title but also for a spot in the 2023 College Football Playoff as well.
That cause for concern is the lack of sack production. The Huskies have only recorded six sacks through five games this season. In comparison, other teams in the Pac-12 conference have already surpassed or are on track to surpass the Huskies’ projected sack total for the season. USC has 19 sacks, Oregon has 18 sacks, Utah has 17 sacks, Oregon State has 16 sacks, and even Arizona and Arizona State each have 13 sacks on the year.
Improving sack production is crucial for the Huskies to complement their high-powered offense and compete at a high level. Last season, the team ranked 19th nationally with 34.5 sacks, a number that seems out of reach this season. Despite returning starters who had solid sack numbers, the current season has seen a decline in production.
Zion Tuputala-Fetui leads the team with two sacks, while Bralen Trice who registered nine sacks a season ago, registered his first sack just last week in Week 5. The defensive unit, led by co-defensive coordinators William Inge and Chuck Morell, must work on improving sack production for the Huskies to become a complete team.
Considering the strength of the Pac-12 this year, addressing this weakness is imperative as the season progresses. By effectively getting to the quarterback, Washington football can become a serious contender for the National Championship.
