Michael Penix Jr. is at +380 odds to win the Heisman Trophy in 2023.

Three years ago, Michael Penix Jr’s future was in doubt after he suffered his second torn ACL in three years. Today, he has emerged as the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy.

When Penix announced his intention to transfer to the University of Washington to play football for the Huskies, there was some drawback regarding whether he could stay healthy or not. While Penix has been taken out of games early, it certainly hasn’t been because of his health.

Penix has just been that good for the Huskies thanks to Kalen DeBoer and Ryan Grubb and the system they have surrounded him with. Last year he placed eighth in the Heisman trophy voting after he completed 65.3% of his passes for 4,641 yards, 31 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

Through four games in 2023, he has completed 74.6% of his passes for 1,636 yards, 16 touchdowns, and two interceptions. In Week 4 against Cal, he didnt see the field until there was 5:52 left in the first quarter. He was taken out of the game with 4:37 left in the third after throwing for 304 yards and four touchdowns.

Week after week he effortlessly makes downfield throws that most college quarterbacks can’t. He has the smoothest deep ball in all of college football and consistently sails the ball from one side of the field all the way to the other side’s hash. He averages 409 pass yards and 11.9 yards per attempt per game.

With Michael Penix Jr.  throwing for over half the amount of touchdowns he did last year in just four games, he has solidified his Heisman Trophy campaign. He absolutely should win but if he doesn’t, there’s no way he doesn’t come in second.
