Michael Penix Jr. is primed for a Heisman-worthy campaign that will captivate the nation.
Michael Penix Jr. played an integral part in Washington’s success in 2022. He put up a career year in his first season with the team, throwing for 4,641 yards, 31 touchdowns, and only eight interceptions while breaking the Huskies’ single-season passing record. He went on to win the Alamo Bowl against Texas and placed eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting.
He ranked number one in the Pac-12 with pass completions, pass attempts, and passing yards. He was also number four in completion percentage with 65.3%.
Washington football’s Michael Penix Jr. is primed for a Heisman-worthy season
Transferring to the University of Washington was a career-defining moment for Penix. He started his career at the University of Indiana where he played for four years prior to joining the Huskies. Penix ended up throwing for more touchdowns in one season with the UW than in all of his years combined at Indiana.
Last season was also the first time he was able to play more than six games in a season after suffering two torn ACLs in 2018 and 2020. Durability certainly wasn’t a question with the Huskies last season and hopefully, he can keep that up this season.
Penix had the opportunity to declare for the 2023 NFL Draft last year but instead opted to return for his senior season. He credited the success of the team as his reason to return as he felt the Huskies had unfinished business; to win a National Championship.
With his sights set on bigger goals, Penix enters the 2023 season as a candidate for the Heisman Trophy again.
