Julius Brown, Cornerbacks

Grade: B

Julius Brown was announced as the new cornerback coach for the Huskies. Brown is a former defensive back out of Boise State who began his coaching career with his alma mater, and eventually also worked at Troy, Arkansas State, Utah State, Texas Tech, and Fresno State.

Brown has been a staple in the recruiting game, especially at Fresno State. The Huskies need a presence like Brown in order to get the defensive side of recruiting back on track.

Inoke Breckterfield, Defensive line

Grade: B+

The Huskies lacked dominant defensive line play last season. Inoke Breckterfield is known for his recruiting and developmental abilities and this is something that Washington needs in 2022 in order to get back on top of the Pac-12.

Breckterfield previously coach Los Angeles Rams All-Pro defensive tackle, Aaron Donald, at Pitt in 2011. He was also the defensive line coach at Wisconsin from 2015-2020. In 2020, the Badgers defensive line led the Big Ten in run defense.

Breckterfield is the only staff addition with no previous ties to DeBoer.

William Inge, Co-Defensive Coordinator, Linebackers

Grade: B

William Inge joins the Washington football staff to be the Huskies co-defense coordinator and linebackers coach, the same position he held at Fresno State for two seasons prior. In 2020, the Bulldogs defense ranked No. 3 in the nation for average sacks per game.

The Bulldogs also ran a 4-2-5 scheme and it’s likely a look that Inge will bring to Washington.

Chuck Morrell, Co-Defensive Coordinator, Safeties

Grade: C

Chuck Morrell is yet another name who is on the move from Fresno State to Washington. He will join Inge as co-defensive coordinator and will also coach the safeties.

DeBoer credited Morrell for his “attacking and dominant defenses” in a statement regarding his hiring.

Eric Schmidt, Special Teams Coordinator, Defensive ends

Grade: C+

Yup, another name from Fresno State who is moving to Washington. Eric Schmidt serves as the Bulldogs’  defensive line coach and special teams coordinator. Schmidt can be credited along with Inge for Fresno State’s top defensive line in the nation.

The Huskies have some stars on special teams like defensive back Kyler Gordon. While it is still unsure whether Gordon will declare for the 2022 NFL Draft, it will be interesting to see who Schmidt will turn into the next big special teams star.
