Washington football has announced Kalen DeBoer as the next head coach.
Kalen DeBoer has been a part of the head coaching speculation since Washington football fired Jimmy Lake on Nov. 14 and now things are official.
DeBoer has spent the last two years as the head coach of the Fresno State Bulldogs. The team went 3-3 in the 2020 shortened season and improved to 9-3 in 2021.
He has served as the offensive coordinator for the Sioux Falls Cougars from 2000 to 2004. In 2005, he was promoted to head coach, a position he held for five years. The Cougars won three NAIA Championships under DeBoer (2006, 2008, and 2009) and he had an overall 67-3 coaching record with the team.
DeBoer has held a number of other positions before landing this Power 5 head coaching position with the University of Washington.
He has held the position of offensive coordinator at Southern Illinois (2010-2013), Eastern Michigan (2014-2016), Fresno State (2017-2018), and Indiana (2019). In 2020, returned to Fresno State as head coach.
The Bulldogs averaged 463.3 total yards on offense in 2021. The running game averaged 133.5 yards while the passing game averaged 330.08 yards.
The starting quarterback for Fresno State is Jake Haener, a former Washington commit who transferred from the school in 2019. Haener threw for 3,810 yards, 32 touchdowns, and nine interceptions on a 67.5% completion percentage this year.
What to expect for Washington Huskies football under Kalen DeBoer
The Huskies needed a head coach who could help get the passing game going and that’s exactly what Kalen DeBoer can do.
DeBoer is someone who can take proper control of the quarterback situation in Washington. Dylan Morris cannot continue to be the starter and the offense has to start utilizing its wide receivers.
Fresno State had the number one offense in the Mountain West Conference in 2021.
The Huskies aren’t short on talent at all, but DeBoer has the tough task of getting this team back on track ahead of him.
