The Washington Huskies have a problem. Well, they have several problems, but the question is how long will it take for them to get fixed? Right now, it feels like never for Husky fans. The Washington football program is becoming a mess and head coach Jimmy Lake’s response to their second-straight loss on the season didn’t feel very reassuring.

Head coach Jimmy Lake is becoming a problem for Washington football

I couldn’t help but roll my eyes as I listened to Jimmy Lake’s post-game press conference after the Huskies loss to the Michigan Wolverines. His statement felt like the same one given after Washington’s loss to the Montana Grizzlies the week before. He knew the offense had to execute plays better and the defense had to stop the run. Instead of creating a game plan that would better prepare his team, the Huskies looked even worse when facing the Wolverines.

Sure, it can be expected for a team to perform worse when going from an FCS to an FBS opponent, but it was simply the lack of preparation, adjustments, and offensive creativity that cost UW the game.

The offense is in desperate need of a change and it needs to happen quickly. Coach Lake said that the philosophy on offense was the same one they operated under in 2020. Maybe it worked for them then, but it isn’t working for them now.

When asked what they tried to do differently on offense against Michigan than they did against Montana, Lake had trouble answering the question. He said they have to do everything better. Not only on offense but on defense too.

Through just two games, the Husky defense has allowed 470 total rushing yards. The UW said that their plan on defense going into the game against Michigan was focused on stopping the run but instead they let Blake Corum and Hassan Haskins run all over them.

The Huskies let the Wolverines rush for a whopping 343 total yards, with Corum sweeping past the defense for a 67-yard touchdown in the middle of the second quarter.

The Washington football program is quickly falling apart and Husky fans can’t feel comfortable with how their coach is responding to the unpreparedness of this team. It’s becoming unacceptable and change has to happen.

Coach Lake is a defensive coach but he has to get something on offense figured out. If he can’t, the Huskies 2021 season is doomed.
