Washington football adds one more piece to their 2020 class, by way of an FCS All-American

Washington football is going to have a fun quarterback competition before the 2020 season gets underway. The coaching staff wanted to add another scholarship quarterback to the room, and they found an experienced, hometown hero to bring in.

Kevin Thomson won the Offensive Player of the Year award in the Big Sky conference in 2019. He was also a finalist for the Walter Payton Award (the FCS equivalent of the Heisman trophy) during his final season at Sacramento State. He accounted for 39 total touchdowns (27 passing, 12 rushing) in 2019, and immediately becomes the best dual-threat option on the roster. He threw for 3,216 yards and rushed for 619 more. It’s very possible that his legs and experience make him a dark horse candidate for the starting job.

“We’re really pleased that Kevin is returning to play for his hometown school. He adds a lot of experience to our quarterbacks room and should help raise the level of competition for everyone,” Lake said in a press release. This makes it sound like new offensive coordinator John Donovan will be holding a truly open quarterback competition. Thomson will be at one disadvantage, as he’ll be a bit behind in learning the playbook.

Originally a two-star recruit, Thomson committed to UNLV out of Auburn-Riverside High School. He underwent Tommy John surgery during his time at UNLV before transferring to Sacramento state. Because of that surgery, Thomson is heading into a very rare sixth year of eligibility, and that experience should play to his advantage in a QB competition where the rest of the guys in the room have thrown three passes combined at the college level.

With the NCAA giving their approval of a preseason plan, it looks like we will have a full college football season in 2020. Returning players have already returned to campus for Washington, and freshmen will begin the LEAP program on June 22nd. Summer practices will be underway soon, and Thomson can begin to compete for the starting job.
