Can Washington football hit it big in Texas in 2021?
Washington football has been trying to recruit Texas every single year, and every year they seem to hit with at least one guy. Can they finally go big in 2021?
It’s no secret that Texas is arguably the best state in the country when it comes to high school football, and pumping out top-flight recruits every year, so obviously Washington football would want to get in on that, right? Chris Petersen tried to get his foot in the door, offering players from Texas early and trying his best to establish relationships with those guys, and every now and again it paid off.
Levi Onwuzurike is definitely Washington’s crown jewel when it comes to pulling players out of Texas, and Aaron Fuller made major contributions to the team as well. Victor Curne might be the Huskies’ starting right tackle in 2020, and Myles Rice hasn’t had a major impact on the team, but might be in line for more snaps in 2020 as well.
The Huskies are also bringing in two freshmen in the 2020 class from Texas in Jay’Veon Sunday and Cooper McDonald, which brings the total to six recruits from Texas in the six years Petersen was at Washington. After building the program and making it one of the country’s best, is this the year the Huskies can hit on multiple highly-rated Texas kids?
Running back Brandon Campbell and safety JD Coffey both have expressed major public interest in UW, talking about their desire to take visits to the schools, and posting graphics made by the Washington recruiting department on Twitter. Check out Coffey’s reply here to the tweet below.
Husky fans have also been courting outside linebacker Terrence Cooks on Twitter, who seems to have some interest in Washington as well.
The last guy who Washington seems to have an outside shot at is five-star defensive end Landon Jackson, who has expressed some interest in the Huskies, but obviously, it’ll be close to impossible to pull a five-star out of Texas, especially a player like Jackson, who is a Texas A&M legacy. The fact that he even showed interest though, means the Huskies have a shot. This isn’t the same as 2019, when Texas’ top prospect, running back Zachary Evans, included the Huskies in his top 11 as “Washington University.”
The fact that Texas prospects are showing this kind of interest in Washington is huge for Jimmy Lake and the class of 2021. With everything going on in-state, and who potentially could come in from out of state, adding a few of these guys from Texas would be the cherry on top of what could end up being a stellar, top-10 national recruiting class.
