Washington basketball had their biggest win of the season on against the Maine Black Bears, and while the opponent doesn’t say much, numbers do

Washington basketball had their biggest and most promising win of the season against the Black Bears, beating them 72-53 at home. The Black Bears weren’t able to get within 16 points in the second half, and the Huskies were able to empty the bench and get every single player on the roster playing time.

Isaiah Stewart led the team in points, with 16, and rebounds with nine. The other two five-stars, Jaden McDaniels and Quade Green, were the only other Huskies in double figures. It was a very quiet 11 for McDaniels, who shot 4-17 from the floor.

The Huskies turned the ball over just six times, a season-low for the team, while the Dawgs forced the Black Bears to turn it over 20 times, and were able to really able to run their transition offense for the first time this year.

There’s always room for improvement, and for this team it’s shooting. They shot just 3-15 from behind the three-point line, and 13-20 from the free-throw line, that’ll need to be cleaned up come conference play.

This was probably Washington’s best all-around game of the season, and the Huskies showed they can truly play with anyone, especially once their shooting gets up to speed.

The Black Bears were, unsurprisingly, led in scoring by Andrew Fleming with 18 points, even though most of them came when the game was pretty much out of reach. Nedeljko Prijovic also had 18. Sergio El Darwich, the team’s second-leading scorer, was held to just four points on the night.

The Huskies’ second game in this seven-game homestand will come against the Montana Grizzlies. They won’t be truly tested again for a while, so they have a few games to work on shooting and getting in sync before Gonzaga comes to town.
