Washington football vs. Cal- week two preview
Washington football opens Pac-12 play this weekend at home against the Cal Golden Bears, who beat them last year in Berkley
Washington football opens Pac-12 play against the Golden Bears, who won at home in their opening game of the season as well beating UC Davis 27-13.
The Huskies lead the series against the Golden Bears with a record of 54-40-4. The Huskies were favored over the Golden Bears last year, however, California won 12-10 over the then 15th ranked team in the country. The big story of the game was when Chris Petersen benched quarterback Jake Browning, which led to now Fresno State QB Jake Haener throwing a pick six to linebacker Evan Weaver.
The Golden Bears are hoping to upset the Huskies once again this year. For them to do so they will have to stop Jacob Eason from throwing 349 yards along with four touchdowns like he did against Eastern Washington in his first game in a Husky uniform.
Cal quarterback Chase Garbers (who’s brother Ethan is a UW commit) went 16/23 for 153 yards and no touchdowns last year against Washington. In Cal’s opener against UC Davis, Garbers went 16/28, with two touchdowns and one interception. That production should be a lot harder to come by against the Husky defense.
Running back Christopher Brown was the big story for Cal against UC Davis, rushing for 197 yards and a touchdown on 36 carries. Last year he didn’t play against the Huskies. For the Golden Bears to upset Washington again, he’ll probably need to have a very similar game which is no easy task against the UW defense.
On the defensive side of the ball, we know about the All-American linebacker Evan Weaver. Senior cornerback Caryn Bynum, who had an interception against Browning last year, will be a player to watch on Saturday.
Eason wasn’t the only standout in his first game in purple and gold. Redshirt freshman Richard Newton took his first career carry for a 27-yard touchdown, and was Washington’s leading rusher on the day, so expect him to see more touches this weekend.
Washington has won 15 straight games at Husky Stadium, and expect them to make it 16 straight on Saturday.
The Huskies ended up running the ball 43 times for 200 yards while throwing the ball 38 times for 370 yards. Expect Chris Petersen to keep a balanced offense, but maybe run it a little more because of the success they had last weekend, and because Cal has a good group of defensive backs.
