Washington football lands second DB recruit of the weekend
Washington football is tearing it up on the recruiting trail, landing their second strong, versatile DB of the weekend! The Cali Reign movement is real!
Washington football has put together one of their best offensive recruiting classes (ratings wise) potentially ever, and now the defense is shaping up, after the Huskies landed their third defensive back in the class, Lawndale (Calif.) High’s Makell Esteen! Esteen is an extremely underrated player in the 2020 class, who looks exactly like Sidney Jones (yes, I said that about Jacobe Covington too, but watch the film and tell me I’m wrong), at 6’1 and 170 pounds.
Esteen looks great on tape, he’s a great form tackler, with crazy length, great footwork, and ball skills. He has the size, range, and tackling ability to be a great free safety at the college level, but he would also make a great cornerback. He will definitely do what Myles Bryant did during the spring , where he takes snaps at both corner and safety, and the staff will decide where he fits better, especially considering the run on excellent defensive backs over the last two years.
Esteen is currently ranked 403rd overall by 247 Sports, and 577th by the 247 Composite. He’s been a Washington target for a while, as he was offered very early on in the process. Adding Esteen means there’s potentially one spot left in the 2020 class in the defensive backfield, for hometown hero and Eastside Catholic’s (Wash.) own Ayden Hector.
Fit at UW
Again, Esteen could be used as both a corner and a safety, personally I like his speed, range, and tackling ability best at safety, but he’d fit in at corner very easily. The only thing that could keep him from standing out early at UW is that he will need to add weight. I compped him to Sidney Jones, who weighs 181 pounds. If Esteen can play at 185-190, he’ll be a force to be reckoned with. Just like most defensive backs, he’ll probably start out on special teams, and with his great tackling skills, he can make a name for himself rather quickly.
Congratulations to Makell on his commitment to UW, and we can’t wait to see him in purple and gold!!!
