Washington football has landed their 15th recruit of the 2020 cycle, and have continued showing their very strong presence in California

It’s always a good day when Washington football lands another recruit, and it’s an added plus when they beat out Oregon for said prospect. And today in the latest installment of Jimmy Lake is better than Oregon, the Huskies have landed three-star cornerback prospect James Smith out of powerhouse St. John Bosco (Calif.) High.

Smith is a very refined corner prospect who has just about the most boring film (which is about the highest compliment I can give a corner prospect’s film) because opposing quarterbacks are afraid to test him. And not to mention that he’s doing that in the Trinity League, which is one of the toughest high school leagues in the country. Smith is an excellent tackler who can deliver some big hits, and displays excellent technique. Most of his film displays him getting his hands on a receiver early and often and forcing him off of his spot. Smith is also former teammates with 2019 highly touted UW signee Trent McDuffie.

Fit at UW

Smith has good size, measuring in at 6’1, 180 lbs, and has the frame to easily add about 15-20 pounds. He also has very long arms, and can fit into the Kevin King, Jordan Miller, Keith Taylor mold at cornerback for the Huskies. With the depth that the Huskies have in the defensive backfield, it’ll probably take him a few years to get on the field at the position, but if we know anything about Jimmy Lake’s system, he’ll produce at a very high level for a year or two and then graduate to the NFL.

Washington’s recruiting class is filling up quickly, and it’s currently ranked as the 19th best in the country, according to 247 Sports. There is probably one more spot in the defensive backfield that the Huskies can take (and it will probably go to Saguaro (Ariz.) cornerback Jacobe Covington) but the Huskies are loading up on offense, and filling in the right pieces on defense.

Congratulations to James on his commitment, we can’t wait to see him in purple and gold!!
