Washington Basketball holds on for victory and sweep
Washington basketball held on to beat the Colorado Buffaloes 77-70 on the road in Boulder. The Huskies were able to hold the lead throughout the whole game. Coming in, the Buffaloes were undefeated at home, 7-0 on the season.
Washington basketball got off to a good start on Saturday, scoring 12 straight points. The Buffaloes didn’t score for the first five minutes of the game. After they scored, they went on a 9-2 run, cutting the Huskies leading to 14-9.
The Huskies were still playing at a high level though, as they went on an 8-2 run to lead 22-11. At the 8:08 mark left in the first half the Huskies were leading 30-18 which included making six 3pt shots.
The Huskies led the Buffaloes at half time 48-35. The only reason the Buffaloes was that close sophomore guard D’Shawn Schwartz had 13 of his 22 points in the first half. The 22 points from Schwartz was a career high for him. For the game, he made 6 out of 10 from the field including 4 out of 5 from the three-point line. Also, he went 6 for 6 from the free throw line.
The Huskies started out slow in the second half. They were only able to muster eight points in the first seven and a half minutes, while the Buffaloes scored 16. The Buffaloes were able to get within a point though at 63-62 with 6:35 minutes left in the game.
The Huskies defense though got even tougher with the score tighter. They were able to get the lead to 70-65 with four minutes remaining in the game. The scoring went back and forth between the two teams the remaining of the game for the Huskies win of 77-70.
The biggest difficulty for the Huskies was they had three players in foul trouble throughout the game. Forward Hameir Wright fouled out with 6:15 to play. Forward Noah Dickerson who has had trouble this season had four fouls and played only 22 minutes, scoring 7 points. However, he was still able to impact the game with 8 rebounds. The third member in foul trouble was guard Matisse Thybulle who also had four fouls. Three of the four came in the first half. He had a bad night shooting the ball, hitting just 1 of 4, and all his shots came from the three-point line however he made 6 out of 7 from the foul line. This included three crucial free throws he made at 2:36 minutes remaining in the game. He was fouled trying to make a 3 pt. shot.
The Huskies were led in scoring by Jaylen Nowell with 19 points. David Crisp again having an outstanding game starting the Pac-12 schedule had 16 points. Crisp has made it known in these three games he plans to play it big for this period to end his senior year. Nahziah Carter came off the bench to score nine points all in the first half while Dominic Green had eight coming off the bench as well.
The Huskies are in second place in the Pac-12, behind the Arizona Wildcats. The UCLA Bruins who are 3-0. The Huskies come home to Hec Ed to take on the Stanford Cardinal and the Cal Bears, starting on Thursday, January 17th with Stanford.
