Washington Huskies: 30 greatest football players of all-time
By Brad Weiss
One of the more storied programs in college football history, the Huskies have had their fair share of incredible players during their existence. However, there is one man who stands alone atop our list of the 30 greatest Huskies of all-time. That man is former defensive tackle Steve Emtman.
A native of Spokane, Emtman was not heavily recruited out of high school, and ended up going local with the Huskies program. After redshirting his freshman season, Emtman became an absolute star in 1990, leading the Huskies program back to the top of the Pac-10. The team went 10-2 and won the Rose Bowl in his first season as a starter.
While the 1990 season was great, the 1991 season was the stuff of legend. The Huskies won the national title and Emtman established himself as the best defensive player in college football.
Emtman won the Lombardi Trophy, the Outland Trophy and the Willis Trophy, finishing as the Defensive Player of the Year in the conference for the second straight season.
In addition, Emtman finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy balloting, which is the highest a Huskies player has ever finished. A consensus All-American in 1991, Emtman would go on to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 1992 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis. However, his NFL career was nothing to write home about.
Emtman never did much at the NFL level, flaming out as a 27-year old, becoming one of the bigger busts in NFL Draft history. However, during his time at Washington, he was an absolute monster. He comes in as our best player in the history of the Huskies football program.
