In the late 1920s and early 1930s, the Washington football program fell on hard times. However, they did have one of the better players in program history on the team in Paul Schwegler. Known as “Schweg,” Schwegler was a monster on both sides of the ball for the Huskies, playing huge when the team really struggled.

A two-time All-American at tackle, Schwegler parlayed his football career into an acting career, appearing in a bunch of Hollywood roles. The native of Raymond, Washington was named team captain for the 1931 season, where he capped off his college career by being a defensive standout in the 1932 East-West Shrine Game.

In total, he was named to over 40 all-star teams during his college days. Despite how well he played, the team could muster only a 12-13-2 record in that time. Beloved by his teammates, he was given the Flaherty Medal, which is given to the player who displays leadership.

Schwegler was named team captain his final season on campus. In 1967, was elected into the College Football Hall of Fame. His teams may have been less than stellar during his time at Washington, but he did everything he could to help them win, even if they won only six conference games in his career.
