Washington Basketball: Huskies Pull Out A Tough Win

After the tough loss at Auburn, Washington basketball rebounded well, grinding out a tough win against San Diego.

Washington basketball showed some major grit in their 66-63 win over San Diego on Monday night at the Hec Edmunsen center. Their seniors stepped up in a big way, led by Noah Dickerson, who worked his butt off in the post and finished with 16 points. And of course, defensive wizard Matisse Thybulle was incredible once again with five steals and a block to go along with his six points. Thybulle is such a big part of the Husky 2-3 zone, and without him at the top of it, they might not have made the comeback they did in the second half.

Sophomore Stars

The three sophomores all played huge parts in the win, and it’s great to see how much they’ve grown for the Huskies. Hameir Wright contributed with nine points and some tough defense in the middle of the paint, replacing Sam Timmins. He also hit two clutch free throws down the stretch in place of Jaylen Nowell, had to be taken off the floor to be checked for an injury. Speaking of Nowell, he was excellent, leading the team with 18 points. His defense shouldn’t go overlooked either, as he added in three steals and a block on a shot that could’ve given San Diego the lead.

Nahziah Carter seems to be starting to find his groove, and is improving in leaps and bounds. Once he finds his jumpshot and starts knocking it down consistently, he’s going to be unstoppable. He’s a great scorer inside, and with his athletic ability, he can snatch up rebounds with ease when he wants to.

Getting Better

This Husky team is growing a lot,  I guess you could say they’re getting tougher… together? But they need to consistently hit their open jumpers, especially from beyond the arc. Once again, three point shooting almost killed the Huskies as they went 5-19 from downtown against San Diego. That will definitely improve as the season goes along, and especially come conference play, it’ll be very important for the Huskies.
