The Washington Football team recruits another highly regarded athlete. This time 4-star ATH Asa Turner commits to the Husky Pack
The 2019 Washington Football class adds one more highly regarded player. This time, it is 4-star ATH Asa Turner who has joined the ranks of verbally committed.Turner is a young man with high upside who has been the target of as many as 19 college football programs. In fact, as recently as July 11, he was projected to go to Notre Dame. But Coach Petersen always delivers his message regardless of the odds of success.
This time it was successful.
But who? After all, Notre Dame was the projected victor. But a quick search of Twitter uncovered the lucky young man. Ultimately, Asa Turner chose Washington over Notre Dame and all other programs.
So now for the rest of the story. Who is Asa Turner? Is he a fit? You bet he is!
So far in high school, the 6-foot-4 Turner contributes both on offense and on defense. Offensively, his height gives him a true advantage to hauling in any football thrown in his vicinity. If height alone were the attribute, Turner would be a solid addition. But he is the total receiver package. Great hands, significant burst, wide ranging routes, long strides.
Defensively, his height and 215 pound mass become in immovable object. Ranging downfield, Turner moves comfortably either laterally or downhill towards the ball carrier. When he makes contact, he stops forward progress as he wraps up the runner and downs them instantly.
There were plenty of options for Turner, both scholastically and positionally. But it appears that Turner’s reason for coming to Washington was the reason we tout so often. Coach Jimmy Lake creates NFL worthy defensive backs. And that is the selling point Asa Turner most values in his decision.
Next: Can quarterback Jacob Eason impact Washington Football this year?
And why not? This is his career, and he just committed to the program with the best track record of placing high quality defensive backs on the NFL Draft stage. Washington Huskies step up knowing they can get the job done. That is a huge testament to the mentoring and empowerment afforded to young men under Lake.
Now, talented young men are beginning to notice and express their interest in benefiting from one of the best coaching staffs in the Pac-12, perhaps the NCAA. Turner is one such high-upside athlete.
