5 Teams for Washington RB Lavon Coleman in NFL Draft

The Detroit Lions are already active in the running back market, signing former Philadelphia Eagles leading rusher in LaGarrette Blount. But the rule of NFL free agents remains true: sign a player who can start today. Draft a player who will take over and start tomorrow. With Blount on the roster, the Lions can add solid depth and a future starter by drafting Coleman.
And that’s an incredible strategy for the Lions to make for both the long term outlook for the team and for salary cap considerations. Layering in two players to address a team need gives the bonus insurance in case of injuries.
Coleman carries when he’s ready.
And Blount starts until Coleman earns the right to start when he develops. That ensures the Lions are playing the best player at the position throughout the season.
Should the Lions draft a running back in round one or two, the pressure from the front office mounts upon the coaching staff to start the rookie regardless of their demonstrated ability to perform on the starting unit. A day three pick ensures that the team’s interests will remain to play the most productive, not the higher selected, player.
