The Husky Haul

ATLANTA, GA - DECEMBER 31: Jake Browning

Washington Football recruiting has nine commitments. Ideally the team would like to have five or more commitments this summer. Look for things to heat up

The Washington Football team is a well constructed group of compatible players. Athletes who are offered a role to play for the Washington Huskies have more than speed, strength and agility. The coaching staff for Washington football seek passion, dedication, commitment. It’s a tough road to haul, and that road is fraught with distractions.

But finding just the right fit means the entire recruiting process is a slower, more deliberate pace than many programs.  Unlike the recruiting which relies heavily upon the national ranking system to identify the top recruits, Washington recruiting contacts players who are developing.

You don’t have to be a star to be on our team

That means discovering the talented players before the national rankings. That also means counseling and waiting as national teams drive up to offer their sales pitch – not from a standpoint of fit – but from the “you’re a trophy recruit and we want you!”

And sometimes the Washington Football team does not emerge with a new recruit.

But so far, the team has synchronized team and individual needs with nine football players.  And as of July 2, 2017, the team has offers out to at least 23 players who have exhibited real interest in become a Husky football player.

Great players make great team, but get great offers from NFL

The challenge is aligning the incoming players with the anticipated losses of graduation or the 2018 NFL Draft.  The team boast 18 seniors, plus the likelihood of several juniors electing to participate in the NFL Draft.

Right now, the team is built to have the type of depth to allow for a “next man up” to take over. But the roster will need to be restocked. And so far, the recruiting class sits at nine.  It’s a small number of high quality prospects, but that number needs to increase.

    Can’t argue with results

The  immediate future could do just that. If I am a defensive back seeking to land a career in the NFL, I would star the University of Washington and set their number on speed dial.  In fact, Washington Football players are preferred in the NFL if the 2017 NFL Draft is any indication. Three defensive backs in round two, a wider receiver in round one, and five players heard their names called.

From that, prospects can anticipate how their own careers might project into the NFL.  Players develop in NCAA football through meaningful coaching.  Prospects are entering the Washington program, improving, and emerging NFL ready. Position coaches like Jimmy Lake are found nowhere else in the college forum. To benefit from one of the best defensive back coaches in the NCAA, players must come to Washington University.

    Hot summer

So far the 2018 recruiting class has primarily focused on offensive skill positions. The results so far are phenomenal. Let’s discuss the positions of recruits so far.

    Quarterback                            Wide Receiver
QB Jacob Sirmon                     WR Marquis Spiker
QB Colson Yankoff                  WR Austin Osborne
    WR Devin Culp
    Running Back                          Offensive Lineman
APB Trey Lowe                        OT Matteo Mele

    Defensive Lineman                Linebacker
SDE Draco Bynum                   OLB Jack Sirmon

    Holes to fill

So far, the team needs to bolster depth on defense and in the trenches.    That could be picking up.  Offensive guard Victor Curne from Houston Texas is scheduling an unofficial visit to Washington. He recently earned a scholarship offer from the University of Washington on June 1, 2017.

Right now, he projects as a solid fit on the offensive line. In the likelihood of Washington losing both Andrew Kirkland and Trey Adams at season’s end, Curne will find an immediate role to fill on the team roster.

    DB depth

The Washington Football team needs defensive players.  A true need for the team is at the defensive tackle position.  The team lost Elijah Qualls to the 2017 NFL Draft, and faces further attrition this year with Vita Vea.

Surprisingly, no defensive backs have committed to the team yet.  But the team has garnered the interest of five cornerbacks and a safety so far.   Will the Huskies land a commitment this summer? You would tend to think so.

    Summer Lake

Coach Lake has an incredible track record of coaching up defensive backs., and he has another opportunity to do so this year. At some point, hopefully near term, that will translate into a young man or two entrusting him with their NFL futures.  Right now, he is about as good as it gets.

But the team has more quality from defense as well at risk of entering next year’s NFL Draft. Ultimately, the team will need to attract defenders to fill the roster.

On one hand, the Washington Huskies have a good foundation to the recruiting class of 2018. On the other hand, more work lies ahead this month. So you can bet things will start heating up soon.
Oh, the summer temperatures will heat up as well.
