University of Washington Huskies Kelsey Plum and Justin Schmidt have been named as the 2016-2017 recipients of the 2016-2017 Tom Hansen Conference Medal Winners

Washington Huskies athletes are on a roll this season. Records broken, awards received.

Kelsey Plum continues to fill her trophy display case. However, for this award, she brought a colleague. In fact, she brought a distinguished athlete.  As you learn on the University of Washington‘s website, both Kelsey Plum and Justin Schmidt headlined yesterday:

"“University of Washington student-athletes Kelsey Plum (women’s basketball) and Justin Schmidt (men’s soccer) have been selected to receive the Tom Hansen Conference Medal, one of the Pac-12 Conference’s most prestigious honors.”"

Winning awards and setting records are nothing new to Plum, whose 2016-2017 season resulted in numerous awards and accolades. She set the NCAA scoring record with 3,527 points.  She also broke a single season scoring record with 1,109 points.

She used her record setting NCAA career to launch into the WNBA as the top selection. She now plays for the San Antonio Stars.

Schmidt

In the men’s category, Justin Schmidt is a University of Washington 2017 graduate who hails from Everett, Washington. While he redshirted his freshman year, he remained with the team for four seasons. At the end of his Washington Huskies tenure, he had gained national notoriety as one of the nation’s best defensemen.

His defense was enough to capture the attention of Real Salt Lake who drafted him in round two of the 2017 MLS draft. Per the award press release on the university website:

"“Schmidt’s honors include All-Pac-12 Team (2013, 2015, 2016), NSCAA All-Far West Region Team (2015, 2016), Pac-12 All-Academic Team (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016) and College Soccer News National Team of the Week (Nov. 11, 2016).”"

Both athletes are truly deserving of this most honorable distinction.  Furthermore, the award winners will be featured on a PAC-12 telecast on Thursday, June 29 at 7:00 p.m. PT/8:00 p.m. MT.
