The NFL just invited a Washington Huskies Kevin King to their ranks. Here’s why the Green Bay Packers will love cornerback Kevin King

The University of Washington Huskies are an NFL player assembly line under head coach Chris Petersen. The team simply does not look to the stars: either in recruits or in production on the field. What Coach Petersen insists upon is contribution.  Contribution is not to play for the box stats, but to play for the final score.

Coach Petersen insists upon team play. And that is what cornerback Kevin King brings to the NFL.  That and tremendous size.  Whether combine performance, film production, or simply incredible measurables, cornerback Kevin King is now a rookie heading for the Green Bay Packers.

What the Green Bay Packers will love about Kevin King

The Washington Huskies cornerbacks were tasked with being a complete football player.  As such, Kevin King can help set the edge, will jam at the line, will track a receiver, can play a zone, can tackle, intercept, and even block for a teammate.  Sometimes football fundamentals are not part of a rookies package. They are with Kevin King.

King will not snuff out every pass. But he will give great pass coverage, forcing the quarterback to hesitate, and give the Packers defensive front a chance to get to the quarterback.  His height is a rare asset in the NFL. At 6-foot-3, he can match up with virtually the tallest wide receivers in the game.  And by matching up, I mean solid coverage.

He brings a tremendous presence to a defensive backfield. Not only is he a skyscraper, but he can deliver a significant pop to the receiver at first contact.

No NFL rookie is foolproof.  As such, cornerback Kevin King has plenty to learn at the NFL level.  King’s height is a true unreplicatable asset in pass coverage. But it was his height that saved him in coverage at times.

King needs to bolster his instincts and physicality in the NFL.  And you can bet that is just what the Packers coaches plan to do.  They have had success with tall defensive backs in the past

Given time to adjust to the NFL game, King will be a solid starter with enough upside to be a pro bowler someday.

Why this pick is such a good fit

In the end, this is an excellent fit. The Packers truly needed to address the defensive backfield, and by many accounts picked up a first round talent in the opening of round two.  The Packers face several of the best and tallest receivers early in 2017, and now they have a player who can defend tall NFL receivers.
