Details of Washington Huskies MBB head coach contract today: Six Years $12.3 Million To Coach Hopkins
How does the University of Washington decide how much to pay the next head coach of the Huskies Men’s basketball team? On one hand, the going rate for head coach of a perennial NCAA Tournament Men’s basketball team is not exactly discounted. In fact, it is highly visible, and therefore compensates accordingly.
There is a wide range of compensation, as illustrated by USA Today’s 2016 NCAA Men’s basketball coaches salaries. Top of the heap is Duke’s head coach Mike Krzyzewski earning $7,299,666 . The top PAC-12 salary is that of Arizona’s Sean Miller, bringing in a cool $4,945,664 plus the chance at a $1,200,000 bonus.
USC Doesn’t Mean US Currency
USC, the school which had nearly signed Mike Hopkins, signed Andy Katz Enfield to a six-year deal valued at “well over $1 Million per year”.

On the other hand, the Washington Huskies had extended former head coach Lorenzo Romar for ten years in 2010 at a cost of $1.7 Million per year, excluding bonuses. In the world of finance, you “market test” a salary by escalating it percent over the previous employee. And so, that would place going rate at $1.87 Million for Lorenzo Romar’s replacement.
But the University of Washington drove a pretty good negotiation, landing what appears to be their top candidate at just under market rate. Mike Hopkins comes on board at $1,800,000 in year one, with a $100,000 escalator for each of the remaining five years.

The Plan Takes Shape
Coach Hopkins has spent more than 20 years serving as the assistant coach for the University of Syracuse under venerable coach Jim Boeheim. Boeheim is not the sole brains of the operation and reason for the University of Syracuse’ success. Boeheim recognizes talent around him.
Hopkins, for his part, displayed incredible loyalty to the University of Syracuse. Now, that same loyalty is aligned with the University of Washington.

Abandoning Ship?
And what of the news about players deserting the Huskies? After all, the work will only multiply with each lost player or prospect. Blake Harris wasted no time seeking his release. Michael Porter Jr. has followed Harris’ lead. But, Mike Hopkins said it best.

The University of Washington did not enjoy success this season, and the upcoming season may be barren of trophies as well. But there is reason to believe this could be a turning point. Mike Hopkins is here based on what he knows, and not who he knows.
