There is none better than FanSided’s Landry Hat in gauging interest of Dallas Cowboys. In latest report, The Landry Hat names wide receiver John Ross III as possible target in 2017 NFL Draft

The ultimate goal is the 2017 NFL Draft. To get there, University of Washington wide receiver John Ross III is attending the NFL Combine. The NFL combine sets the stage for prospects to get the attention of the nation. On one hand, University of Washington John Ross III is one such player. On the other hand, showcasing his talents on the west coast meant that his “primetime” was late.  His games were typically bedtime for the millions who watch NCAA football on the east coast.

In conclusion, wide receiver John Ross III instantly became a household name.  That is all thanks to the NFL Combine.   He set an NFL Combine record by running 4.22 in the 40-yard dash.  In the same day, he inked his name to a contract with Nike.

And in the process, he may have caught the eye of Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys organization. Carl Daley of The Landry Hat has an excellent piece specifying the needs of the Dallas Cowboys organization in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Dallas Draft Day Deals Delight

While the obvious needs have been publicly identified as a pass rusher in this draft, the doings of Dallas Draft Day deals is also very well known.   The same Landry Hat revisited the 2010 NFL Draft, where Dallas moved up from the 27th pick to the 24th pick of that 2010 NFL Draft to select Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant. As that deal played out, to complete the trade, the Cowboys included the 90th pick for the New England Patriots 119th pick.

More from The Husky Haul

On one hand, the article is very persuasive, keying in on the fact that there just are not that many elite receivers in the NFL at any one time.  On the other hand, it now begs the question: Do the Dallas Cowboys believe that University of Washington wide receiver is elite?

Logic, Links, and Scenarios

Well, the Landry Hat gives two pieces to the puzzle that link Ross to the Cowboys:

"“The Cowboys have expressed that they would like to add a speedy wide receiver to help stretch defenses and this is seemingly the class to find that type of player.” – Carl Daley, The Landry Hat"

Since John Ross III set the record for fastest time ever recorded at the NFL Combine, he immediately falls into that category.

Daley draws the logical link in the article:

"“In terms of wide receivers, the speedsters shined over the weekend. Washington’s John Ross and Ohio State’s Curtis Samuel stole the show. Ross ran the fastest 40-time in the history of the combine as he recorded a 4.22.”"

And so now it’s merely a matter of can the Cowboys land high enough in the 2017 NFL Draft to select John Ross? Well, if projections are accurate, Ross will likely be a top 20 pick. With his NFL Combine performance, he’ll likely inch up to the 10-15 slots.

Does Dallas Deal Do It?

Right now, the Dallas Cowboys pick at 28.   The very same Landry Hat expects the Cowboys could expect a 1st round pick for Romo if traded. Presuming the pick is in the mid to low teens, the Cowboys would most certainly have enough fire power to move up.  Would they do it?

  • Notre Dame’s Audric Estime is one of the most underrated running backs in the 2024 NFL Draft NFL Mocks
  • The philosophy of the Dallas Cowboys on draft day suggests they would. They had traded up in the draft often in recent history. And the record setting speed of wide receiver John Ross III is very tempting.

The Dallas Cowboys know they frailty of NFL dominance. Right now, the team has loaded up the offense with dominating youth on the offensive line, quarterback, and running back positions. The team needs that one wide receiver to complete the set.

    A Familiar Trio Part II

John Ross III combined with returning rookies Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott would be awfully familiar to Dallas Cowboys fans. Recall Troy Aikman, Emitt Smith, and Michael Irvin had great success in Dallas?

The Cowboys fans, even the most staunchly conservative ones, would jump at the chance to cheer for the trio of quarterback, running back, and wide receiver.

I think there is enough here to call this a legit rumor worth watching.  You know Jerry Jones would love to get one more ring.  Wide Receiver John Ross III could be that one player to put the team over the top.
