UW DB Coach Demetrice Martin Hired to UCLA Staff
By Mark Knight
Jim Mora Jr. is compiling a staff of some of the most impressive recruiters in the country and UW defensive back coach, Demetrice Martin is one of the best.
The new has been confirmed in multiple locations, Bob Condotta verifies it here, and Brandon Huffman of Scout.com verified it to me over the phone. Martin is headed to UCLA to join Jim Mora Jr. Which is an impressive hire for Mora and a untimely loss for UW. Martin is regarded as one of, if not the best recruiter on staff at UW.
Martin is from LA, his extended family is in LA and he is headed back to be home with his family. This move is a good move for him personally and is in no way a slight to UW. UW will just now have to worry about a few of things with Martin gone:
- Hiring someone to replace him, in Condotta’s story above Steve Sarkisian says there is no timetable but they will start looking straight away.
- Landing the recruits Martin had access to and was helping pursue; namely Kevon Seymour, Brandon Beaver, Alphonso Marsh, Ishmael Adams, etc. Beaver and Marsh are the closest to signing to UW, many list Washington as the favorite for those two.
- Not losing any recruits that Martin helped land. Not sure who exactly these ones are but Darien Washington and Bryan Harper are committed defensive backs.
February 1 is signing a day and a lot can happen before then. No school keeps 100% of their verbally committed players but one thing UW did not want to lose was defensive backs for this class. They need help in that department and would love to land a handful of them. The one thing working for UW is that UCLA hadn’t been pursuing the majority of these guys this season and they only have a month and a half to steal away any recruits.
This is the nature of the beast. This is a business. Let’s see what UW does now.
