Austin Seferian-Jenkins to Walk-On for Basketball?
By Mark Knight
Austin Seferian-Jenkins has been seen hanging around the basketball court lately and many assume he wants to walk-on to the basketball team.
Seferian-Jenkins was an impressive basketball player in high school out of Gig Harbor High. He helped carry his team into the “2011 WIAA 4A Boys Basketball Harwood Classic”. In his final game Seferian-Jenkins put up 21 points of his team’s 49, but his team lost to Ballard and that ended what many thought to be Seferian-Jenkins’ basketball career.
However, about the time he announced he would play football for the Washington Huskies, there were also rumors floating around that he could be a dual sport athlete. That he would walk-on to the basketball team. Romar addressed this last February here.
To bring up what Romar said in short:
"“He’s not a project, it is just a matter of other guys in front of him coming out, because they will be in a bowl game, right? He’s going to be coming out in January or late December. As a freshman, you have to come out and learn the schemes and you already have guys that are there. It’s not a matter of him not being able to play or not. He’s a skilled basketball player. It’s just a matter of in order to play, you have to move ahead of some guys.”"
Romar also said that the decision would ultimately be up to Steve Sarkisian. Why do I bring this up?
- Romar specifically designated this time period as when it would be decided.
- I asked Seferian-Jenkins during the football season if he still wanted to walk-on to the basketball team and he said, “I am focused on football for now but if the opportunity came, I would strongly consider it.”
- Taylor Soper of the UW Daily snapped this picture today:
Therefore, the option of Austin Seferian-Jenkins playing basketball as a walk-on is at least being explored. Stay tuned because this big man at 6’6, 258 would be a force to reckon with in the paint, and is already used to catching hot passes.
