First Look at 2012 Husky Baseball Team
Last month the UW baseball team played a series of three intra-squad games which gave Dawg fans their first opportunity to see incoming recruits play in a Husky uniform.
Some of the exciting performances included Junior college transfer Jayce Ray who went 5 for 12 in the leadoff spot and drove in 3 runs over the course of the series.
Much hyped incoming first baseman Trevor Mitsui drove in 3 runs with 2 doubles but the opposing team’s first baseman stole the spotlight, as California native Branden Berry batted .500 while compiling 3 homeruns, 5 runs, and 6 RBIs in the 3 games.
Second baseman Robert Pehl also made an excellent first impression in a Husky uniform as he went 7 for 11 with a pair of doubles and 4 RBIs.
Community college transfer Mac Acker threw 4 innings, giving up no earned runs in the first game of the series. He also contributed a hit to his team’s winning effort in the final game.
Several returning players also had good appearances in the series.
Junior catcher Chase Anselment went 2 for 6 with a pair of RBIs and sophomore Ryan Wiggins drove in 3 runs, stole 2 bases, and scored 4 times over the course of the 3 game series.
Junior infielder Ty Afenir also had a nice series as he reached base 6 times and scored 4 times in the second spot in the lineup.
On the bump, Zach Wright, who is entering his second season in purple and gold, had an excellent appearance in the 3rd game of the series scattering 2 hits in 4 innings of work while striking out 5 batters in a winning effort.
While Husky opening day is still over 3 months away, it was nice to have the new players on the field and the returning players back in action.
