The Last without a 2012 Basketball Commit
By Mark Knight
Washington is now the lone school without a Pac-12 commit for the 2012 Basketball season. Oregon was also without a commit until earlier this week when Dominic Artis committed to Dana Altman’s program.
In fact, there are only 2 teams with only 1 recruit on the board. That is Oregon and Cal (who has a Kaileb Rodriquez from Colorado). Most of the Pac-12, already has three verbal commits or more. Washington has 0.
Four teams in the Pac-12 already have really impressive recruiting classes. Arizona is now listed as the number one recruiting class in the country with three 5-stars in Brandon Ashley, Kaleb Tarczewski, and Grant Jerrett. They also have a 4-star talent in Gabe York. Washington State has a four person class with Demarquise Johnson as the center-piece to the impressive class.
Colorado has three 4-star commits in Xavier Johnson, Wesley Gordon, and Josh Scott. They also have a verbal from a small forward out of Michigan, Wesley Gordon. Lastly, UCLA has a 5-star “Point Forward” named Kyle Anderson and they landed a commit from a 4-star prospect in Jordan Adams. UCLA also has a legitimate possibility to steal the number one recruit in the nation from UNLV in Shabazz Muhammad.
Where is Washington in all of this?
- UW’s top prospect, Demarquise Johnson, for the early signing period signed with his teammate at WSU. This was who the Huskies really wanted to land in the early period.
- There will be a couple of decisions coming soon that Washington is in the mix for; Zena Edosomwan and Landen Lucas.
- They have a few guys that they want, but will not know their decisions until the late signing period; Anthony Bennett and Anrio Adams.
What are they doing?
- Teams want impact guys every year but if there was any year to bring in role players this may be the season. UW has such a HUGE opportunity in 2013 recruiting class, if they were to grab the wrong guys they could miss out on some of that talent in 2013.
- They may end up with a couple of prospects that are just role players and may not develop until late in their college careers. Which is never a bad thing in the Romar system. Given it is the right recruits- this class may not be half bad.
Who is most likely to sign?
- Landen Lucas is a higher probability to sign than Zena Edosomwan and it could be as early as this weekend as UW is his last stop on his official visits. He may be the first and only in the early signing period.
- In the late signing period it could be anyone, prospects you have never heard of-will come out of no where and UW will find their way into their recruitment. Stay tuned.
