Last Weekend for Hoops Visits
By Mark Knight
The deadline is looming to sign the last 2 scholarships for UW for the 2011-2012 season. This coming Wednesday, May 18, is the last day to making any additions by way of scholarship for next season and as of now there are two confirmed visits scheduled for this weekend.
Richard Peters and Daouda Soumaoro are both scheduled to spend the weekend on the UW campus with Soumaoro on an official visit and Peters on an unofficial visit, as he is still only classified as a junior in high school.
UPDATE: Peters was unable to work out the details to make the trip, (an unofficial visit comes out of your own pocket) but plans to visit as soon as possible. A blog will be up later about Peters and what this means for his reclassification.
Peters is listed as a 6’10, 260 pound Center out of Westwind Prep International. He is working on maintaining a 2.5 GPA to re-classify to the 2011 recruiting class. However, he seems to think he will be a 2012 commit to UW. He has stated that UW is his favorite and has even been quoted as saying, he can see himself playing at UW.
Soumaoro is listed as a 6’9, 220 pound Center, and is an interesting case because as of a week ago he had listed his final three schools as; Iona, Texas Tech, and St. John’s. Though has re-opened the possibility of going to the University of Washington which is great news as he takes his final visit the week he needs to decide. The odds are in UW’s favor as he already taken a visit to St. John’s and he walked away with an offer but didn’t accept it. He told Adam Zagoria 2 weeks ago that he was going to decide that next week. However, he did not and is still looking for the right fit. Many had assumed that Coach Lavin from St. John’s had Soumaoro locked up and basically all but committed, that doesn’t appear to be the case.
Soumaoro is still a bit raw offensively like many of the athletes that come from Africa, but he has a great defensive motor and works really hard on both ends of the court. He has the ability to shoot from inside or outside and is aggressive in rebounding but needs to work on his aggression with the ball in the paint. I will need to spend some time watching tape of him, and then will come with a better perspective on how he would fit if he were to commit.
I have yet to hear of any other visits for this final weekend but stay tuned:
