University of Washington Huskies Men’s Basketball Team Reportedly Interested In Miami Transfer Guard Rashad Muhammad

With the University of Washington facing the season sooner than they’d like, the team is working towards reinforcing the roster with a spectrum of alternatives. One such alternative exists in Miami transfer student guard Rashad Muhammad.  Per Jon Rothstein, Muhammad has garnered the interest of the University of Washington.

The University of Washington Huskies Men’s Basketball Team is looking for a win for the 2018 recruiting class. So far, those coffers lie empty.  It’s understandable as Coach Hopkins works the multitasking functions of implementing his system while learning the PAC-12 recruiting trail.

It will take time.

But sometimes a matter as important as recruiting needs a jump start. And right now, that could be exactly what Rashad Muhammad delivers to the Washington Huskies. He formerly played two season with San Jose State, averaging 13.5 points and 3.1 rebounds in 30.2 minutes per game.  During that time, he set a Mountain Conference freshman record for three-pointers made with 75.  He last played in 2014-2015.

He transferred to the University of Miami, but according to NCAA rules, he had to sit out a season.  He continues to retain two years of NCAA eligibility. Per a subsequent report from the Miami Sun-Sentinel’s Christy Cabrera Chirinos, Muhammad was dismissed from the team moments before the team’s opening tip-off against Stanford University.

Coach Jim Larranaga explained:

"“We just have certain standards we have set for all our players and he just never was able to meet those standards. Even during the year that he sat out, we were constantly reminding him of how important it is for him to understand the responsibilities of a Miami player and he didn’t do that.”"

Win Win

Now that he has served his waiting year, Muhammad is eligible to play immediately on any NCAA team willing to take a chance. A 6-foot-6 185 pound shooting guard, Muhammad could slide out to the small forward role for the Huskies this year. He’s a proficient scorer, and his experience would be a welcome addition to the Huskies.

On Muhammad’s part, landing on a PAC-12 basketball team would be a chance to restore his basketball acumen onto a course for an NBA career.  Particularly with the stage set with the debut of new head coach Mike Hopkins.

It’s impossible to gauge the mutual interest of the Washington Huskies and Rashad Muhammad. But it’s worth noting, particularly in the absence of progress on more conventional fronts.
