With the season quickly approaching (nine days!), we are going to break down the Pac-12 by position, starting with quarterback. We’ll end the series with the first edition of our weekly conference power rankings.
1. Oregon Ducks
Marcus Mariota is in Heisman discussions after exploding onto the scene as a freshman last season. Despite throwing for nearly 2,700 yards and 32 touchdowns, he was overshadowed on a national scale by even more impressive seasons from fellow freshman Johnny Manziel and sophomore Braxton Miller. In his second year leading the Ducks, expect Mariota to steal the spotlight.
ASU has a three-pronged attack at quarterback, similar to its pitchfork. Taylor Kelly flew under the radar as a redshirt sophomore taking over for Brock Osweiler. He entered spring practice as the third string quarterback and ended the season as one of the top three signal callers in the Pac-12. While Kelly has wheels, Michael Eubank still comes in to change up the pace occasionally. Mike Bercovici has drawn rave reviews out of fall practice and has solidified himself as the No. 2 option behind Kelly.
3. UCLA Bruins
If it were down to Kelly and Brett Hundley, I would give Hundley the edge by a sliver, but due to the Sun Devils depth, the Bruins come in third in the position rankings. Hundley was one of three ultra-impressive first year starters in the Pac-12. As a true freshman, Hundley threw for over 2,700 yards and 29 touchdowns. Alongside Jonathan Franklin, he also led the Bruins to nine wins and a Pac-12 South title.
