Is Richard Peters an Option for UW in 2012?

Richard Peters was working hard to get into the class of 2011 and play for the University of Washington basketball team. However, there were a few things that were working against him; getting his SAT scores back in time, finishing school before the last signing period, and maintaining a 2.5 GPA through his senior year in high school.

All this did finally come together but it was after the final signing period and UW was already working on getting Shawn Kemp Jr. onto their roster. Peters stayed in the 2012 recruiting class and is doing a post-grad year at Westwind Prep in Arizona.

Currently, UW only has 2 scholarships that will open up next season with the graduation of Darnell Gant and Scott Suggs. However, many have speculated and Romar even hinted at the possibility that one or more players may find themselves headed to the NBA after next season. Opening up more roster spots and thus more signings in 2012.

This is the exact situation that Lorenzo Romar explained to Richard Peters when Romar was down recruiting Demarquise Johnson earlier this week. Romar took the time to not only scout and recruit Johnson, he also watched Peters work out and talked with him after his workout. Richard Peters described the conversation, “Romar told me that he still has his eye on me and that he still wants me but the situation is different this year.”

UW was speculated and assumed by many including myself to be no longer recruiting Richard Peters just because of the scholarship situation. This may not be the case, but more of a waiting game to see what happens with the top two targets that UW is chasing currently, Demarquise Johnson and

Anthony Bennett. The waiting game is also in affect to see if any of the current players on the UW roster decide to go to the NBA draft or even do something crazy like transfer.

Peters is still hoping UW gets back in the mix for him soon, “I really like UW as a school and the whole program, but it’s hard going to a school as a second option.” This is where Peters finds a dilema because last season his favorite was UW by a landslide and this year they may not even have a scholarship for him. However, Romar told Peters that they still want him.

In the meantime Peters will be visiting WSU next weekend, on Sept. 23. Clemson is also setting one up with him soon.

Who is Recruiting him? Clemson, Washington State, Washington, Marquette, Texas Tech, Seton Hall, Auburn, and Alabama.
