The 6 foot 7 inch forward from Vashon Island has been added to the Huskies roster as Coach Romar’s latest walk on. He seems like a life-long Husky fan and now he gets a chance to live out a dream that most of us wish we could. Welcome on board, Alex!

Here’s the school’s full press release:

SEATTLE — Washington Head Coach Lorenzo Romar announced the addition of walk on Alex Wegner to the roster on Thursday. Wegner, from Vashon Island, Wash., will be a freshman in 2011-12.

“We are looking forward to Alex joining us,” Romar said. “He is a very good student, proven winner and hard worker.”

The addition of Wegner brings the Husky roster up to 15 players total: 13 on scholarship, two walk ons.

A 6-foot-7, 190-pound wing, Wegner lettered four years for Vashon Island High School. He helped the Pirates to the Washington State 1A Tournament all four seasons, helping them win the 2009 title and finish third in 2010.

Wegner averaged 22.9 points, 11.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.8 steals and 2.4 blocks per game as a senior. He was a team captain and was twice voted Most Inspirational by his teammates.

Wegner was a McDonald’s All-American nominee and garnered numerous local honors as a senior, including: WIBCA All-State, AP All-State, State 1A All-Tournament First Team and Nisqually League All-Opponents First Team.

Several of his standout games earned him recognition from the Seattle Times as he was named WIAA/Seattle Times “State Athlete of the Week” after back-to-back games of 38 points, 21 rebounds followed by 32 points and 7 rebounds. He also earned “Star of the Week” honors by the same publication after scoring 29 points, 23 rebounds and 7 blocks against Ilwaco in the 1A State Tournament, followed by 28 points, 10 rebounds and 7 blocks against Hoquiam.

Wegner left high school with several records in tow, including most points in a single game (38) and most points in a season (596).

Wegner played AAU basketball with the Emerald City Pioneers.

Wegner comes from a family of Huskies. His father, Derek, mother, Glenna, and sister, Morgan, all graduated from Washington.
